Did you come back from a walk on the dark side with part of your soul missing? Is there a curse on you…or someone you love? If you go to school in New Essex, there’s one guy to go to: Chance Fortunato, the Demon’s Apprentice. Trained to be a servant of the Nine Hells, there’s no one who knows better how to fight the forces of darkness when they prey on the world of the cowan. With all the wrong skills to be a hero, he just might be the best kid for the job. All he has to do is juggle homework, a major problem with authority and a relationship with a girlfriend who’s as unique as he is. He thought graduating was going to be easy, but Hell has nothing on high school.

The Demon's Apprentice

Sold to a demon as a young boy, fifteen year old Chance has finally escaped his Infernal master and is trying to reclaim a life of his own. Forced to hide his Hellish past from his family and the Conclave of the Magi, he is happy enough to set aside most of his dark magick skills. But living among the non-magickal cowan population and staying off the Conclave’s radar gets even harder when a supernatural murder takes place at Chance’s new high school and he’s everyone’s prime suspect! Caught between the authorities of two worlds, Chance not only has to find a preternatural killer, he has to figure out a way to beat it before it strikes again. Forced to fight evil on its own terms, he’ll have to walk a fine line between hero and monster as he starts down the road to redemption.

Good and better than good...enough to convince me that some small press books  stack up nicely against anything the big houses can crank out. I'll definitely be buying the sequel." hurog.com Website of Patricia Briggs, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author (Feb 26, 2012)

This is art work done by my friend Roanen back in the 90s and some updated images he created a few years ago. Click on the image to get a better look. There are lots of details hidden throughout the image. This is the main cityscape in New Essex proper, the downtown area.

This is the first piece of art I got from my friend Rhonda Lynne Wingo. She captures some of the critical elements of the central characters in the book, Chance, Lucas & Wanda. Particularly, Wanda's style, the ubiquitous TK rod, and the band name on Wanda's shirt. She also captures the individual styles of the three characters.

This is the image I had for the paintball pistol seen later in the book. It's big, heavy and looks like it has some authority to it.

This one is by Roanen Barron. This is a scene from Chapter three. I love how he got Chance's expression here, and the steam coming off of his jacket after the fire sprinklers had cut off. The whole pose of the body is terrific, and the smoke on the ceiling catches the feel of the moment as Chance makes his play for freedom.

However....this seems a little more like the kind of thing a mage would carry... especially a cool one like Dr. Corwyn.

Both of these are Ariakon paintball guns. I wanted to include a website, but I can't find one.

This is from Angela Gulick back in 2011.  If her name sounds familiar, it's because she ended up doing the cover to the Demon's Apprentice when I released it again.

She said it was  "incomplete" but I have to say, they're some of the best impressions of Chance's eyes I've ever seen. I love the depth she manages to put into this.

If this is incomplete, I REALLY can't wait to see what the finished product looks like.

So this one is a stock image Angela took and "Chanced" up a little. I like the attitude it conveys. I imagine his hair tied back into a ponytail for this.
