Summer vacation isn’t all fun and hanging out when you’re a wizard-in-training. For partly reformed warlock Chance Fortunato, it’s even worse. In addition to the constant study and training, he has to prove he’s ready to be a full-fledged apprentice before he starts at the Franklin Academy. Plus, he’s beginning to think someone has it out for him.

If things weren’t bad enough with a snooty proctor monitoring his every move and demons trying to capture him, his father finally makes his first attempt to get his wayward son back under his control by trying to frame his mom. When the old man proves just how far he is willing to go with tragic results, Chance must make a desperate sacrifice play to guarantee his freedom once and for all.

Great story line, well developed characters.. love the interaction between Chance and his friends. Keep writing as I can't wait for the next one.

Short, but vengeance is... Patient?!

Despite being shorter than the previous two novels, this is still a highly enjoyable, Highly readable piece of urban-ish fantasy. If you enjoy magic and "underworld" type stories, but are sick of lame vampires always being the center of action, this is a good series to get into.

Fun series with a surprisingly relatable protagonist.

I bought all four books together so if you see this same review for each, please forgive! But honestly, this book was a lot of fun to read. Great character to follow, right from the start. Chance Fortunato is simultaneously tough yet fragile, funny but sensitive, determined but still prone to self-doubt. Basically, he's a great portrayal of a teen who is figuring out how to move forward in life, despite some serious trauma. Oh yeah, and don't forget the distracting effects of hormones on a teen boy. How it plays out to serve the storyline, from its impact on his relationships to how it drives his choices is really well done. There might be a little over-reliance on where people fall out on the character spectrum (outsiders/goths = good, elitist conformists = bad), but the mystery-solving and overall narrative makes up for it. From a fantasy perspective, the magic system and how it's brought to life is well done, and shows a great awareness of global traditions. Ultimately, I'd call this a page turner, and I really, really look forward to the next installment.
